Volleyball takes split in crossover play

CLARION, Pa. (Oct. 6) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team claimed a split in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action for the second-straight day, posting a 3-0 win (25-13, 25-19, 25-8) over Millersville before dropping a 3-1 match (25-18, 25-23, 13-25, 25-22) to Shippensburg on Saturday.

With the split, the Vulcans move to 18-4 overall with a 7-2 mark in league play. Cal U posted a 2-2 record this weekend in conference crossover matches after winning 24-straight crossover matches since 2009.

Against the Marauders, senior Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) posted a team-high 13 kills on 17 attempts for a .765 attack percentage. Sophomore Julia Muzy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Liceu Franco Brasileiro) and senior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added seven and six kills, respectively. Junior Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and Fromknecht combined for 31 assists in the victory.

Junior Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) led the defense with 15 digs against Millersville and Muzy collected seven digs. Senior Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) finished with six blocks and the trio of Fromknecht, senior Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and freshman Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) each tallied four blocks.

Versus the Raiders, Harris and Franz led the team with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Fromknecht and Muzy both added nine kills with Fromknecht recording a .533 hitting percentage and 17 assists in the loss. Freund directed the offense with 35 assists, marking her fifth 30-assist match of the year.

Delaney set a career-high with 25 digs on Saturday night, while Almeida and Muzy finished with nine and eight digs, respectively. Franz tallied three blocks in the loss.

Cal U returns to PSAC West play on Friday, Oct. 12, when it hosts division-leading Clarion at Hamer Hall, starting at 7 p.m.
