Cal U splits in PSAC Crossover play

CLARION, Pa. (Oct. 5) – The Vulcans claimed a split on Friday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play, earning a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-16, 25-14) over East Stroudsburg before suffering a 3-1 loss (25-21, 25-23, 18-25, 25-14) to Lock Haven in a rematch of last year's conference championship.

With the split, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team moves to 17-3 overall with a 6-1 mark in league play. The Vulcans entered the weekend having won 24-consecutive matches in PSAC Crossover action since the 2009 seasons.

Against the Warriors, senior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) registered her fifth double-double of the season with a team-high 13 kills on a .722 hitting percentage and 11 assists. Fellow senior Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) and sophomore Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) both added five kills, while junior Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) finished with 16 assists and seven digs.

Junior Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) paced the defense with 15 digs, while Harris and senior Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove) tallied 10 and eight digs, respectively. Fromknecht recorded eight blocks and fellow senior Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) finished with six blocks in the sweep.

Versus the Bald Eagles, the senior trio of Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), Franz and Fromknecht led the team with seven kills. Harris and Almeida added six and five kills, respectively, in the loss. Fromknecht and Freund directed the offense with 18 and 17 assists, respectively.

Delaney posted her seventh-straight match with at least 10 digs, finishing with 18 on Friday night. Almeida added 15 digs, while sophomore Julia Muzy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Liceu Franco Brasileiro) totaled eight digs.

Cal U resumes PSAC Crossover play tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 6, with a pair of neutral-site matches, starting with Millersville at 2:30 p.m.
