Cal U rallies to win over Clarion, 3-2

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 10) – In a meeting of the last two league champions, the Vulcans rallied to a 3-2 victory (20-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-15, 25-12) against Clarion on Friday night at Hamer Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 19-4 overall with an 8-2 record in league play. Meanwhile, Clarion drops to 19-4 this year after entering play on a 10-match win streak. The Golden Eagles still lead the PSAC West standings with a 9-1 mark in conference action.

Senior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) recorded her third triple-double of the season, finishing with 22 assists, 11 kills and a season-high 14 digs. Senior Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) tallied 11 kills and 13 digs against the Golden Eagles for her fifth double-double of the year. Sophomore Julia Muzy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Liceu Franco Brasileiro) posted 10 kills and senior Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) finished with eight kills on a .368 hitting percentage.

Junior libero Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) also reached double-digit digs against Clarion, leading the team with 21. Senior Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove) and junior Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) finished with nine and seven digs, respectively, while Freund added 22 assists on Friday night. Franz and Fromknecht both collected five blocks in the victory.

The Vulcans continue divisional play tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 13, when they host Slippery Rock in the Convocation Center at 2 p.m.
