Cal U rallies past Millersville in OT, 62-60

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 6) – Redshirt junior guard Travon Vann (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) made a three-pointer to tie the game with 2.7 seconds left in regulation on Friday night, as the Vulcans posted a 62-60 victory against Millersville at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 7-6 this season behind a 5-1 mark at home. The Vulcans, who won their first overtime game since March 2007, are now in a three-way tie in the divisional standings with a 4-3 record. Meanwhile, the Marauders fall to 3-8 overall and 1-6 in conference action.

Junior guard Quentin Harding (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and Vann both finished with a team-high 11 points on Friday. Vann also tied his career high with eight rebounds and added three assists, while Harding collected six rebounds in the win.

Playing his fourth game of the season, junior guard Keith Lowe (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and also tallied a team-best six assists. Senior forward Steve Swiech (Greenock, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) posted nine points, nine rebounds (five offensive) and tied his career high with three blocks in the win.

Trailing 53-49 with 4:35 left in regulation, Cal U mounted a 7-1 run over a two-minute span to take a 56-54 lead with 2:34 remaining after back-to-back tip-ins by Swiech. The Marauders then scored five-straight points to take a 59-56 lead with 12.5 seconds left before Vann forced the game into overtime after making a three-pointer, 59-59, with only 2.7 seconds remaining. The two teams combined for 13 lead changes and seven ties during regulation.

In the opening minute of overtime, Swiech scored a fastbreak layup to give the Vulcans a 61-59 lead. Both teams were then held scoreless over the next four-plus minutes before each team made a free-throw in the final seconds of overtime.

After shooting nearly 42 percent in the first half, the Vulcans finished the game shooting a season-low 32.9 percent (24-of-73) from the field. In the loss, the Marauders, who failed to make a field goal in overtime, shot 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the floor. Both teams struggled from the free-throw line, as Cal U made a season-low 55.0 percent (11-of-20) and Millersville shot just 33.3 percent (8-of-24).

Cal U out-rebounded Millersville by a 53-45 margin after collecting 23 offensive rebounds that led to 20 second-chance points. The Vulcans also finished with 15 assists and tied their season-low with 14 turnovers.

Millersville junior Larry Grant scored a team-high 15 points and added eight rebounds and five steals in the loss, while forward Rob Wyley finished with 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

The Vulcans continue their weekend homestand tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 7, when they host West Chester at the Convocation Center with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Live stats of the game will be available by clicking here.
