LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Jan. 21) - Four Vulcans scored in double-digits on Saturday afternoon, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team posted an 80-57 win at Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the victory, Cal U improves to 11-5 overall and 8-4 in PSAC play. Meanwhile, Lock Haven falls to 7-8 overall and 6-6 in league action.
Senior forward
Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) led the way for the Vulcans with 19 points on 8-of-20 shooting and four assists. Freshman
Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep) added 17 points, including five-of-six from beyond the arc, and senior
Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) paced the Vulcan attack with five assists to go along with 16 points.
Solid shooting helped Cal U jump out to an early 18-8 lead to start the first half. The Vulcans orchestrated a 10-0 run to expand their advantage to 20 points, 28-10, with just over seven minutes remaining. A rebound followed by a layup by forward
Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake Lehman) at the 4:52-mark would give Cal U its biggest lead of the half, 37-10. A steal by guard
Amber Boyd (Cleveland, Ohio/Regina) would close out the first half with Cal U leading 39-16.
Junior
Nakia DeBlanc (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) scored six early points to keep the Vulcans advantage at 23 points, 49-26, with 14:25 remaining. Lock Haven worked the deficit to 15 points, 62-47, before Cal U retook the momentum and expanded its lead to 27 with 2:07 left in the game.
The Vulcans shot 47.8 percent (32-67) from the field while holding the Bald Eagles to just 36.9 percent (24-65). Cal U went 4-of-9 (44.9 percent) from the three-point line in comparison to just 3-of-13 (23.1 percent) by Lock Haven. Cal U scored 25 points off of 22 Lock Haven turnovers.
Senior guard Sharay Hall led the Bald Eagles with 15 points and six rebounds, while Freshman Samantha Lane set career highs with four rebounds, four assists, two blocks and three steals.
