Volleyball downs Mercyhurst, 3-0

ERIE, Pa. (Sept. 30) – Junior Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) recorded 11 kills and eight blocks on Friday night, as the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team posted a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-20, 25-12) at Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the victory, the Vulcans extended their win streak to eight matches to improve to 14-2 overall with a perfect 6-0 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Lakers fall to 9-8 this season and 3-4 in league action.

Franz finished with 11 kills on 24 attempts and tied her season high with eight blocks at Mercyhurst. Junior Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove) posted six kills, while sophomore Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) and junior Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) each tallied five kills on Friday. Junior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) recorded 16 assists and sophomore Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) finished with 10 assists in the win.

Senior Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) paced the defensive effort with 15 digs with Delaney and Almeida adding 10 and eight digs, respectively. In addition to the eight blocks by Franz, Fromknecht collected four blocks.

Cal U continues its weekend road trip in Erie, Pa., tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 1, when it faces Gannon at the Hammermill Center with the match starting at 2 p.m.
