CLARION, Pa. (April 7) – Behind a dominant performance in doubles play, the No. 13 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory at Clarion on Thursday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 15-7 overall with a 2-0 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles drop their sixth-straight match to fall to 2-12 this season and 0-3 in divisional action.
Cal U swept the doubles session in impressive fashion, winning all three matches by an 8-0 margin. At the first position, junior
Annabel Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelund) and sophomore
Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) dealt Golden Eagles' Michaela Hardy and Jaclyn Metzger an 8-0 defeat. Juniors
Axelle Fernandez (Toulouse, France/Institut Familial) and
Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Gumnasia Number 60) earned their sixth-straight win at second doubles, claiming an 8-0 victory. Senior
Laurie Navarro (Eysus, France/Jules Supervielle) and junior
Franziska Steinhardt (Bad Lausick, Germany/St. Augustin Gymnasium) posted an 8-0 win against Clarion's Lauren Eonta and Tawyna Waggle at the third slot.
The Vulcans also cruised in singles play winning all six matches, while losing only a combined four games. Pieschl registered her team-best 24th win of the season by tallying a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Metzger at the first position. Pondicas, the second-ranked player in the region, posted a 6-1 6-0 win at second singles over Hardy and Steinhardt claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the third slot.
In fourth singles, Zherdeva won her fourth-straight match by recording a 6-1, 6-0 win against Eonta. Fernandez and Navarro both collected shutout victories on Thursday at the fifth and sixth position, respectively. Fernandez posted the win over Kerstetter, while Navarro earned the victory against Stephanie Harrison.
The Vulcans continue PSAC West play tomorrow, Friday, April 8, when they host Mercyhurst for Senior Day at Club Sport and Health in Monroeville, Pa. The match is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
