CALIFORNIA (April 7) – Former California University of Pennsylvania standout goalkeeper
Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) recently signed a professional contract to play for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) PRO league.
A four-year starter for the Vulcans, Yobbi finished his collegiate career with a 38-22-6 record and 16 shutouts, including nine as a senior in 2010. He finished his career as the school's all-time leader with a 1.17 goals-against average and 5,916 goalkeeper minutes.
As a freshman in 2007, Yobbi earned PSAC Rookie of the Year honors, as well as National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Second-Team All-Region. In 2008, he helped lead Cal U to its first PSAC Tournament Championship and was named PSAC Tournament MVP.
The three-time All-PSAC performer joins several former Cal U players who have played in the professional ranks, most recently
Nicholas Addlery (1999-02) and
Tomas Boltnar (1998-01).
“I think he [Yobbi] has all of the required skills to succeed at the next level,” said head coach
Dennis Laskey. “He has been able to quickly make the transition to the higher level at each step in his career.”
