No. 13 Cal U claims PSAC West crown

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (April 14) – The No. 13 Vulcans claimed their seventh-straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Championship as they blanked No. 39 Slippery Rock, 9-0, on Thursday afternoon at the SRU Tennis Courts.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team, the top ranked team in the Atlantic region, closes out the regular season with a 17-7 record a 4-0 mark in league play. The Rock, who entered the contest as the third-ranked team in the region, finish the regular season at 14-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

The Vulcans began play by winning all three doubles matches. At first doubles, the No. 20-ranked pairing of junior Annabel Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelund) and sophomore Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) earned an 8-6 win over Janelle Krantz and Sarah Lynch, with juniors Axelle Fernandez (Toulouse, France/Institut Familial) and Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Gumnasia Number 60) also claiming an 8-6 win at second doubles against Lauren Coggins and Dunja Drmac. The team of senior Laurie Navarro (Eysus, France/Jules Supervielle) and junior Franziska Steinhardt (Bad Lausick, Germany/St. Augustin Gymnasium) swept Samantha Bruggeman and Elisabeth Yetiskul, 8-0, at third doubles to close out doubles competition.

In singles play, No. 30-ranked Pieschl, the reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Week, posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lynch at the first position with No. 37-ranked Pondicas downing Drmac, 6-2, 6-3, at second singles. Steinhardt blanked Yetiskul, 6-0, 6-0, at third singles, while Zherdeva defeated Krantz at the fourth position, 6-3, 6-2. At fifth singles, Fernandez earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Coggins and Navarro closed out play by blanking Bruggeman, 6-0, 6-0, at the sixth position.

Cal U will return to the court next at the PSAC Team Championships on April 22-23 hosted by Bloomsburg.
