Megan Kermond (Adelaide, Australia/Unley) led five players in double-figures with 16 points on Friday evening, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team posted an 89-67 win at Kutztown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.
With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 4-3 this season with a 3-2 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears fall to 3-7 this year behind a 2-3 record in conference action.
Johns finished with 16 points on Friday and led the team with nine rebounds (three offensive) and five assists. For the season, she now leads the team with a career-high 17.3 points per game and has been the team's top scorer in six of seven games this year.
In her first start of the season, Kermond made four-of-eight from beyond the arc to finish with 16 points. Freshman guard
Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep) scored a season-high 13 points off the bench after shooting four-of-four from three-point territory. Junior guard
Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) posted 12 points on four-of-eight from long range and added three assists and three steals, while senior guard
Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) tallied 11 points, four rebounds and four assists in the win.
Trailing early in the game, the Vulcans responded with a 10-0 run, capped by a Kermond three-pointer, to take a 13-6 lead with 15:47 left before halftime. Midway through the half, Cal U posted an 11-3 run over three minutes to stretch its lead to 11 points, 29-18, on a layup by Luckett at the 10:04-mark. The Golden Bears trimmed the deficit to five points, 32-27, before the Vulcans countered with 10-unanswered points to reclaim a double-digit lead at 42-27 with 2:34 remaining before the break.
After leading by 14 points at halftime, Cal U scored seven-straight points to start the second half to take a 53-32 lead following a trey by Michael with 18:37 remaining. The Golden Bears worked the deficit down to 17 points before the Vulcans responded with a 12-2 run to expand their lead to as many as 27 points, 70-43, on a three-pointer by Michael at the 11:38-mark. Cal U maintained its sizeable double-digit lead throughout the second half, as Kutztown was only able to cut the deficit to 15 points, 72-57, with 6:12 remaining.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 42.3 percent (30-of-71) from the field, including 48.5 percent (16-of-33) from beyond the arc. The 16 three-pointers are the highest single-game total in recent program history (since 2002-03). Meanwhile, the Golden Bears barely shot above 30 percent from the floor in the second half and finished the game making 43.4 percent (23-of-53) from the field. The Vulcans held a 40-32 advantage on the glass and scored 19 second-chance points after posting 16 offensive rebounds.
Kutztown sophomore guard Andrea Sisson scored a team-high 16 points in the loss, while classmate Avery Hodgson finished with 12 points. Junior forward Steph Zewe tallied eight points and eight rebounds on Friday.
Cal U continues its PSAC Crossover road trip tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 10, when it travels to East Stroudsburg for a 2 p.m. start.
