CALIFORNIA (Dec. 4) – In a meeting of two of the top teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team suffered 71-65 loss to Bloomsburg on Sunday afternoon at the new Convocation Center in league crossover action.
With the loss, the Vulcans drop to 5-1 overall and are in a three-way tie for second place in the PSAC West standings with a 3-1 mark. Meanwhile, the Huskies improve to 7-1 this season and hold a two-game lead in the PSAC East standings with a 4-0 league record.
Senior swingman
Chad Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) scored a game-high 16 points behind three three-pointers and five-of-seven from the free-throw line. He also collected three rebounds and two steals on Sunday. Tipton has posted double-digits five times this season and leads the team with 14.8 points per game.
Junior forward
Mitchell Weedon (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) finished with 13 points on six-of-eight shooting and tallied a team-high six rebounds. Senior guard
CJ Townes (Joppatowne, Md./Joppatowne) posted eight points and three assists off the bench, while freshman forward
Jeremy Posey (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) added eight points, two blocks and two steals.
After the Huskies scored the first points of the game, the Vulcans scored 12-unanswered points to take a 12-2 lead following a three-pointer in transition by junior
Quentin Harding (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) with 15:20 left before halftime. Bloomsburg responded with a 12-1 run over five minutes to take a 14-13 lead before a Tipton layup reclaimed the lead for Cal U, 15-14, with 10:07 left in the first half. The Vulcans led for the remainder of the half, expanding their lead to seven points before taking a 35-32 lead into the break.
Bloomsburg started the second half on a quick 7-1 run to take the lead at 39-36 with 17:07 remaining. The Vulcans later tied the game at 42-42 on a pair of free-throws before the Huskies scored eight-straight points to claim a 50-42 lead with 11:05 left in the game. Cal U countered with an 11-3 rally to tie the game at 53-53 following a pair of free-throws by Townes with 5:42 left. The Huskies again took the lead with a 9-0 run over three-plus minutes to take a 62-53 lead at the 2:36-mark.The Vulcans managed to trim the deficit to four points in the final minute before the Huskies sealed the win with a pair of free-throws.
In the loss, the Vulcans were held to a season-low 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the field and shot only 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from three-point territory. Cal U out-rebounded Bloomsburg by a 38-28 margin and scored 19 second-chance points off 18 offensive rebounds.
Senior guard Trevon Johnson led five Huskies in double-figures with 14 points and added five assists and five rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Ed Hall posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Nnamdi Njoku posted 12 points off the bench.
Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 6, when it travels to face No. 17 Bowie State at 6 p.m. Last season, the Vulcans posted a 92-76 upset victory against the then-No. 11 Bulldogs at Hamer Hall.
