Cal U opens facility with win, 91-65

CALIFORNIA (Dec. 3) – Senior forward Steve Swiech (Greenock, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) led four players in double-figures with 18 points on Saturday afternoon, as the Vulcans opened play at the new Convocation Center with a 91-65 victory against Mansfield in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 5-0 overall with a 3-0 mark in league action. Meanwhile, Mansfield falls to 2-2 this season and drops to 1-2 in conference play after appearing in the PSAC Semifinals in each of the last two years.

A preseason All-PSAC West selection, Swiech finished with 18 points on 9-of-12 attempts from the floor. Through five games this year, he is second on the team in scoring while shooting 65.9 percent (29-of-44) from the field.

Senior Chad Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) posted 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals against the Mountaineers. Redshirt junior guard Travon Vann (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) added 14 points behind 9-of-10 from the free-throw line and finished with five rebounds and four assists off the bench. Sophomore forward Chris Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) tallied 12 points and three steals off the bench, while freshman forward Jeremy Posey (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) tied Tipton with a team-high six rebounds.

With Mansfield leading early in the game, Cal U scored 13-unanswered points to take a 21-11 lead on a layup by Tipton with 9:49 left before halftime. The Vulcans stretched their first-half lead to as many as 15 points, 40-25, at the 1:30-mark following a fastbreak layup by Douglas Jr. Appiah (Toronto, Ontario/Ascension of Our Lord), who finished with a team-high four assists.

Early in the second half, the Vulcans mounted an 8-1 run to stretch their lead to 21 points, 59-38, with 13:15 remaining. Mansfield worked the deficit down to 16 points, 61-45, before Cal U posted a 10-0 run over three-plus minutes to take a 71-45 lead with 8:45 left in the game. The Vulcans maintained their 20-point advantage for the remainder of the game, leading by as many as 28 points, 91-63, in the final minute.

The Vulcans finished the game making 51.6 percent (32-of-62) from the field, while the Mountaineers were held to a season-low 35.8 percent (19-of-53). Cal U also converted 86.2 percent (25-of-29) from the free-throw line after making all 21 attempts in the second half. The Vulcans held a significant 42-27 advantage in rebounds and scored 56 points from inside the paint.

Freshman forward Joe Bell posted a double-double after leading the Mountaineers with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Cory Henneghan added 12 points off the bench, while sophomore Kevonte McClain posted 11 points in the loss.

Cal U continues its weekend homestand tomorrow, Sunday, Dec. 4, when it hosts Bloomsburg at the new Convocation Center for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
