Women's Basketball rolls past Bowie State, 83-62

INDIANA, Pa. (Dec. 18) – Behind four players scoring in double-figures on Sunday afternoon, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team opened play at the Komen Shoot for the Cure Classic with an 83-62 win over Bowie State at the Kovalchick Complex.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 6-3 this season and extend their win streak to three games. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs remain winless this year at 0-7.

Junior guard Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) tied her career high with 19 points against Bowie State after shooting seven-of-nine from the floor, including four-of-five from beyond the arc. In the last three games, she is shooting 12-of-22 from long range (54.5 percent) with four three-pointers in each game. During the Vulcans' win streak, Michael is averaging 16.3 points per game after scoring just 5.0 points per game in the first six games of the year.

Senior forward Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) finished with 18 points on 8-of-21 attempts from the field. She also posted eight rebounds (three offensive), three assists and three steals in the win. Freshmen Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake Lehman) and Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) each scored a season-high 12 points on Sunday afternoon. Adamshick tied her season high with nine rebounds (seven offensive), while sophomore forward Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) added eight rebounds off the bench.

Leading 15-14, Cal U mounted a 13-2 rally over three-plus minutes to stretch its lead to 28-16 on a layup by Johns with 9:11 in the first half. The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 28-21 before the Vulcans countered with a 13-4 run to expand their lead to 41-25 on a jumper by Mahady at 3:11-mark. Bowie State cut the deficit to single digits, 41-32, before Cal U took a 44-32 lead at halftime.

The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 52-49 in the second half before the Vulcans mounted a 17-6 run over four minutes to take a 69-55 lead on a layup by Antonenko with 9:38 remaining. Leading 70-60, the Vulcans closed the game with a 13-2 run over the last six-plus minutes.

For the game, Cal U shot 34.7 percent (31-of-71) from the field  and 45.0 percent (9-of-20) from beyond the arc after making eight treys in the first half. In comparison, Chestnut Hill made 39.6 percent (21-of-53) from the floor and 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from long range. The Vulcans out-rebounded the Griffins by a 45-33 margin and collected 17 steals in the victory.

Junior Jasmine Jacobs and senior Kim Jones each scored a team-high 16 points in the loss, while Jones added 14 rebounds (five offensive) to record a double-double on Sunday.
