CALIFORNIA (Dec. 18) – Senior forward
Steve Swiech (Greenock, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) posted his first double-double of the season and was one of four players in double-figures, as the Vulcans posted an 88-48 victory against Chestnut Hill on Sunday afternoon at Hamer Hall.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team snaps a four-game losing streak and improves to 6-4 overall. Meanwhile, Chestnut Hill falls to 9-4 this season after entering the contest tied for first in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).
Swiech finished with his third career double-double after tallying 16 points and 11 rebounds (five offensive) against the Griffins. He made five-of-nine from the field and six-of-eight from the free-throw line in the win. Swiech, who is averaging 10.0 points per game, leads the team with a .614 field-goal percentage (43-of-70) this season.
In his season debut, junior transfer guard
Keith Lowe (Columbus, Ohio/Centennial) led the team with 19 points and seven assists. He shot 6-of-12 from the floor and was 7-of-10 from the charity stripe and also added seven rebounds (three offensive). Freshman guard
Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)) finished with 12 points off the bench, while junior forward
Mitchell Weedon (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) posted 11 points and nine rebounds.
Cal U, who led the entire game, jumped out to a 15-4 lead behind nine points from Swiech in the first six-plus minutes. Leading 28-14, the Vulcans mounted a 19-1 rally to take a 47-15 lead with 2:39 left before halftime. During the run, the Griffins missed all eight field-goal attempts and committed a pair of turnovers. After a Chestnut Hill free-throw, Lowe converted a traditional three-point play and Swiech made a fast-break layup to give Cal U a 52-16 halftime lead.
The Griffins opened the second half on a 10-4 run before the Vulcans countered with an 8-1 rally to take a 64-27 lead after a pair of free-throws by Fortune at the 13:56-mark. Chestnut Hill was only able to trim the deficit to 29 points, 65-36, in the second half, while Cal U stretched its lead to as many as 40 points in the final minute.
After shooting over 50 percent in the first half, Cal U finished the game making 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the field. The Vulcans also shot 71.8 percent (28-of-39) from the free-throw line. In comparison, the Griffins made only 25.4 percent (15-of-59) from the floor and 57.7 percent (15-of-26) from the charity stripe. Cal U dominated on the glass, out-rebounding Chestnut Hill by a staggering 57-29 margin, and registered 19 assists on 28 field-goals.
Chestnut Hill guard Luke Dickson scored a team-high 10 points in the loss, while freshman Alssene Sanitilus and sophomore Jakeem Bogans both finish with nine points.
The Vulcans are idle for over a week before returning to action at the 37th-annual Rotary Tangerine Tournament in Winter Park, Fla., starting Dec. 29 against West Georgia at 5 p.m.
