Vulcans fall at East Stroudsburg, 86-71

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Dec. 10) – Despite a season-high 19 points by freshman guard Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono Mountain West (Pa.)), the Vulcans dropped an 86-71 contest to East Stroudsburg on Saturday evening at Koehler Fieldhouse in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team falls to 5-4 this year after opening the season at 5-0. The Vulcans are also now 3-3 in league play, as crossover games are counted toward the conference standings this year. Meanwhile, the Warriors improve to 6-5 overall behind a 3-3 record in conference action.

Fortune, who tied his season high with 23 minutes played, led the team with 19 points on six-of-eight shooting from the field and six-of-six from the free-throw line. He has scored in double-figures three times this season and is averaging 6.2 points and 1.7 rebounds as a true freshman.

Junior forward Mitchell Weedon (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) finished with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds off the bench, while redshirt junior guard Travon Vann (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) added 11 points, three rebounds and four assists. Senior Chad Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South Western), the team's leading scorer, was limited to eight points after making just two-of-seven from beyond the arc.

After shooting over 55 percent in the second half, Cal U finished the game making 45.0 percent (27-of-60) from the field and 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from beyond the arc. In comparison, the Warriors shot 49.0 percent (25-of-51) from the floor and 50.0 percent (6-of-12) from three-point territory. Despite being out-rebounded 33-30, the Vulcans posted an 18-2 advantage in second-chance points.

Freshman guard Whis Grant led five ESU players in double-figures with 18 points on 7-of-12 attempts, including three treys. Senior Eric Bryan finished with 16 points and six rebounds, while junior Duane Johnson led the team with eight rebounds.

Cal U is idle next week due to finals before returning to the court on Dec. 18 when it hosts Chestnut Hill at 2 p.m. The game will be played at Hamer Hall due to fall graduation being held in the Convocation Center the previous day.
