CALIFORNIA (Nov. 8) – The Vulcans extended their winning streak to nine matches on Tuesday night with a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-16, 25-20) against Gannon at Hamer Hall in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 29-4 this season under first-year head coach
Peter Letourneau. The Vulcans, who are the top-ranked team in the region, continue play in the tournament on Friday, Nov. 11, when they face West Chester at 5 p.m. in the semifinals, which will be held in Lock Haven, Pa.
Junior
Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford), who was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week earlier on Tuesday, led the team with 13 kills against the Golden Knights. Fellow juniors
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and
Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) each added nine kills with Franz recording a team-high .562 hitting percentage. Senior
Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) and sophomore
Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) combined for 35 assists in the sweep on Tuesday.
Sophomore
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) paced the defensive effort with 18 digs, and senior
Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) and Harris tallied 13 and 11 digs, respectively. Franz also recorded four blocks in the victory.
With the loss, the Golden Knights fall to 20-11 after entering the tournament as the fourth-ranked team in the region.
