CALIFORNIA (Nov. 5) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team closed the regular season with a 3-2 victory (25-13, 25-18, 17-25, 18-25, 15-13) on Saturday afternoon against Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at Hamer Hall.
With the win, the Vulcans finish the regular season with a 28-4 overall record and a 17-2 mark in league action. Cal U will now host Gannon on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Hamer Hall in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament. Meanwhile, Clarion falls to 18-11 this season and finishes the year in a three-way tie for second place in the divisional standings.
Junior
Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) posted a team-high 13 kills in the win, while classmates
Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and
Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) both added 10 kills. Wilson, who registered a .479 hitting percentage, also added four blocks against the Golden Eagles. Sophomore
Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) tallied 27 assists and senior
Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) added 24 assists in the win.
Senior
Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) moved into a tie for sixth place all-time in school history with 1,070 digs after collecting 22 digs on Saturday. Sophomore
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) and Harris finished with 14 and 10 digs, respectively. Harris now leads the team with seven double-doubles this year after posting only one double-double in her first two seasons.
The Vulcans will now make their seventh-consecutive appearance in the PSAC Tournament, winning the league title in 2005 and 2007-09. Cal U and Gannon split the regular-season series with the home team winning each match.
