Women's Basketball rolls past Cheyney, 89-47

CHEYNEY, Pa. (Nov. 20) – Senior forward Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and junior guard Megan Kermond (Adelaide, Australia/Unley) both scored 18 points on Sunday afternoon, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team cruised to an 89-47 victory at Cheyney in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league action since PSAC Crossover games are counted toward the divisional standings this season. Meanwhile, the Wolves remain winless this year at 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Kermond set a career high with 18 points behind five-of-nine from beyond the arc on Sunday. Her five three-pointers are the most in a game since classmate Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) hit five treys at Clarion on Feb. 11, 2010. Kermond also was three-of-three from the free-throw line and collected two rebounds and two steals in 15 minutes off the bench.

Johns finished with 18 points on 7-of-13 attempts from the floor and collected six assists in the win. Senior guard Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) posted 14 points after shooting seven-of-nine from the field and added four assists, while Michael scored all 11 of her points in the first half against the Wolves.

In the opening minutes of the game, Cal U built a 14-2 lead with 13:36 left in the first half behind six points from both Luckett and Michael. After the Wolves cut the deficit to six points, the Vulcans responded with a 22-2 run over six-plus minutes to take a 38-12 lead with 3:13 remaining before halftime. Kermond started the rally by scoring 12-straight points in less than three minutes. Following a Cheyney free-throw, Cal U scored the final seven points of the half to take 45-13 lead into the break.

The Vulcans maintained a 30-point lead in the second half until a Cheyney basket at the 13:03-mark, 55-26. Cal U then went on a 13-1 run over the next two minutes to stretch its lead to 41 points, 68-27, following a pair of free-throws with 11:24 left in the game. The Vulcans continued to keep the significant lead through the remainder of the game, leading by as many as 44 points, 89-45, in the final minute.

Cal U shot a season-best 51.7 percent (30-of-58) from the floor and registered 22 assists on 30 field-goals. The Vulcans made 9-of-19 attempts (47.4 percent) from three-point territory and also converted 20-of-23 attempts (87.0 percent) from the free-throw line. Cal U finished with a staggering 42 points off turnovers after forcing Cheyney into 30 turnovers and collecting 17 steals.

Freshman forward Brooke Garrett finished with a team-high 15 points in the loss, while sophomore Alexis Peterson scored 10 points off the bench.

The Vulcans are idle for almost two weeks before continuing PSAC Crossover action on Dec. 3 when they host Mansfield at 1 p.m.
