CHEYNEY, Pa. (Nov. 20) – The Vulcans had four players score in double-figures, including a team-high 19 points by senior
Chad Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South Western), as they remain undefeated this year following a 90-65 win at Cheyney on Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 4-0 this season with a 2-0 mark in league play since PSAC Crossover games are counted toward the divisional standings this season. The Vulcans are off to their best start since 2003-04 when they opened the year with 10-consecutive wins before finishing 23-7 overall. Meanwhile, the Wolves are 0-3 this year with a 0-2 record in conference action.
Tipton finished with 19 points on six-of-nine shooting from the field, including five-of-eight from beyond the arc. He has now made a career-high five treys in a game twice this season, while shooting 44.7 percent (15-of-31) from three-point territory for the year.
Freshman forward
Jeremy Posey (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) finished with 13 points and five rebounds off the bench, while redshirt junior guard
Travon Vann (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) posted 10 points and led the team with seven rebounds and six assists off the bench. Senior forward
Steve Swiech (Greenock, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) added 11 points in only 16 minutes of action.
Leading 14-12 midway through the first half, the Vulcans scored 10-unanswered points to take a 22-12 lead at the 8:06-mark. After a Cheyney trey stopped a three-minute scoreless streak, Cal U closed the half on a 16-5 rally behind five-straight points from Tipton to take a 38-20 lead at the break.
In the opening two minutes of the second half, Tipton hit a three-pointer and Swiech converted a traditional three-point play to give the Vulcans a 43-22 lead. Cheyney managed to the cut the deficit to 17 points twice in the second half before Cal U countered with baskets to reclaim a 20-plus point lead. The Vulcans led by as many as 28 points on multiple occasions in the second half.
The Vulcans shot nearly 60 percent in both halves, finishing with a .577 field-goal percentage (30-of-52). Cal U also converted 24-of-29 attempts (82.8 percent) from the free-throw line, including 17-of-20 (85.0 percent) in the second half. The Vulcans out-rebounded the Wolves by a 37-25 margin and collected 20 assists on 30 field-goals.
Senior guard Brandon Baylor scored a game-high 26 points in the losing effort, while guards Jason Sabb and Jerrod Johnson each finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
Cal U is idle for almost two weeks before continuing PSAC Crossover play on Dec. 3 when it hosts Mansfield at 1 p.m.
