CALIFORNIA (Nov. 12) – Behind a 10-0 run to finish the game, the Vulcans opened up the 2011-12 season with a 64-57 victory over Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon in the first day of a tip-off tournament at Hamer Hall.
Senior forward
Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) posted a game-high 19 points, including 17 in the second half after playing only three minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. She finishing the game shooting 6-of-12 from the field, including three-of-four from behind the arc, and four-of-four from the free-throw line.
The Vulcans also received double-digit scoring efforts from senior guard
Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) who finished with 13 points, while junior guards
Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) and
Megan Kermond (Adelaide, Australia/Unley) each finished with 10 points. Luckett also added six assists against the Greyhounds.
Defensively, the Vulcans forced 24 turnovers with five steals by freshman guard
Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep). Sophomore forward
Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) tallied a career-high five blocks and led the team with eight rebounds (three offensive).
Despite being out-rebounded 28-19 and shooting only 31.3 percent from the floor in the first half, the Vulcans entered halftime with a 22-16 lead. After the break, Johns converted an early lay-up and then connected on two three-pointers just three minutes into the half. The Vulcans increased their lead to eight points, 32-24, on Johns' second trey of the half before Indianapolis battled to tie the game seven times in the second half.
Down 57-54, Kermond connected on her second three-pointer of the game to tie the score at 57-57 with 1:51 left in the game. With a little over one minute remaining, Luckett found Michael for the go-ahead three pointer. Johns later made a pair of free-throws and Luckett converted a fast-break lay-up to seal the victory.
Junior forward Nickole Gonser recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebouds to pace the Greyhound attack, while classmate Kristin Turner posted seven points, nine assists and four steals in the loss.
The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 13, when they host Minnesota State in the championship game of the tip-off tournament at 3 p.m. Minnesota State posted a 63-46 win over Ashland on Saturday.
