MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 8) – Junior middle hitter
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) registered a combined 31 kills on Saturday to help the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team earn wins over Lock Haven and Millersville in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.
With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 19-3 overall with a 10-1 mark in league action. Cal U is now tied with Gannon for first place in the divisional standings with eight conference matches remaining in the regular season.
Against Lock Haven, Cal U dropped the first set before claiming a 3-1 win (23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22). Franz finished with 11 kills on a career-high 38 attempts, while fellow juniors
Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and
Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) added nine kills versus the Bald Eagles. Junior
Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and sophomore
Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) engineered the offense with 21 and 17 assists, respectively.
Senior
Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) paced the defensive effort with 21 digs and junior
Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove) added 17 digs and four service aces on Saturday. Franz also collected eight blocks (two solo), while Fromknecht finished with seven blocks (three solo).
In the final match of the night, the Vulcans recorded a 3-1 victory (25-18, 26-24, 20-25, 25-23) over the host Marauders. Franz established a career high with 20 kills on 35 attempts for a .486 hitting percentage, while freshman
Julia Muzy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Liceu Franco Brasileiro) and Wilson finished with eight and seven kills, respectively. Fromknecht and Freund combined for 47 assists in the four-set win and Fromknecht also contributed five blocks (two solo).

Katya Kopanarova (Sofia, Bulgaria/81 Victor Hugo) led the team with 14 digs against Millersville, while McMullen tallied 12 digs on Saturday night.
Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 11, when it travels to Huntingdon, Pa., to face NCAA Division III perennial powerhouse Juniata, who is ranked No. 11 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 poll.
