Vulcans outlast Gannon, 3-2

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 29) – In a match featuring two of the top-three teams in the regional rankings, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team rallied to a 3-2 victory (25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 14-25, 15-11) against Gannon on Saturday afternoon at Hamer Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 26-4 overall and now has a two-match lead in the divisional standings with a 15-2 mark. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights fall to 19-9 this season and into a tie for second place in the standings at 13-4 in league play.

Junior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) finished with a season-high 15 kills on 26 attempts for a team-best .538 attack percentage on Saturday. Classmates Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) added 12 and 11 kills, respectively, in the win. The setter tandem of sophomore Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and senior Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) each engineered the offense with 20 assists.

Sophomore Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) established a career high with 21 digs. Freund recorded her sixth assist/dig double-double of the year by tallying 20 digs against the Golden Knights and senior Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) added 17 digs.

The Vulcans continue their five-match homestand on Friday, Nov. 4, when they host Slippery Rock at Hamer Hall for a 7 p.m. match.
