Cal U suffers loss at Gannon, 3-0

ERIE, Pa. (Oct. 1) – Despite double-doubles by sophomores Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) and Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove), the Vulcans suffered a 3-0 loss (18-25, 21-25, 23-25) to Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at the Hammermill Center on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team falls to 14-3 overall and 6-1 in league action. The loss snaps the Vulcans' eight-match win streak this season and is their first loss to the Golden Knights since Gannon joined the PSAC in 2008 (seven matches). Meanwhile, Gannon improves to 12-5 this season and remains in first place in the divisional standings with a perfect 8-0 mark.

Delaney finished with her third double-double of the season, tallying 10 kills and 10 digs against the Golden Knights. Freund posted 15 assists and a season-high 11 digs on Saturday for her second double-double of the year.

Sophomore Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa. /Seneca Valley) registered a team-high 11 kills, followed by Delaney with 10 kills and redshirt junior Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa/Bethel Park) with seven kills. In addition to the 15 assists by Freund, junior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) finished with 19 assists at the Hammermill Center.

Junior Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) totaled 12 digs to lead the Vulcans in the loss.

The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 4, when they host West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC)-preseason favorite Wheeling Jesuit at Hamer Hall, starting at 7 p.m.
