ERIE, Pa. (Jan. 22) – Sophomore guard Quentin Harding (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) hit a go-ahead jumper with 45 seconds left and converted a free-throw in the final seconds to seal a 72-70 victory for the Vulcans over Gannon at the Hammermill Center on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the win, the Vulcans move to 9-6 overall with a 2-2 mark in divisional play. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights fall to 9-6 this season with a 1-3 record in league action. The win by Cal U at the Hammermill Center was its first since the 1993-94 campaign (2-9 all-time) and snapped Gannon's 10-game home winning streak dating back to last season.

Harding scored a team-high 17 points and was one of five Vulcans to score in double-figures (all starters). The McKeesport native made 7-of-13 attempts from the field with a pair of three-pointers and added three rebounds and two assists in the win. Harding entered the weekend as the team's leading scorer despite scoring only a combined seven points in the last two games.

Senior Rashawd Hatten (Clairton, Pa./Clairton) and junior Chad Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) each finished with 12 points and Hatten also collected a team-high nine rebounds (six offensive) to go along with four assists. Senior guard Joe Berenato (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) posted 11 points, four rebounds and five assists in his first start this season, while junior forward Steve Swiech (Greenock, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) finished with 10 points.

After Cal U took a 37-36 lead at halftime, the teams combined for 10 lead changes and three ties in the second half. The Golden Knights took a 68-67 lead at the 2:00-mark on a jumper by guard Kevin Agee before the Vulcans reclaimed the lead, 69-68, on a Berenato field-goal with 1:38 left in the game. On its next possession, Gannon again took the lead on a jumper by Agee with 1:10 remaining before Harding gave the Vulcans the last lead change of the game, 71-70.

Agee missed a jumper and collected the offensive rebound before junior Steve Piotrowicz missed a potential go-ahead three-pointer with 1.5 seconds left. Harding grabbed the rebound and made the first of two free-throws with Agee missing a potential game-winning trey as time expired.

Cal U finished the game shooting at a 46.6 clip (27-of-58), its best performance in PSAC West play this year. The Vulcans also tied their season high with 11 three-pointers, making 45.8 percent (11-of-24) from beyond the arc. The Golden Knights shot similar percentages on Saturday, making 47.1 percent (24-of-51) from the field and 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from long range.

The Vulcans out-rebounded the Golden Knights by a 32-30 margin and committed a season-low 10 turnovers. Behind five assists from both Berenato and junior guard Freddy Appiah (Toronto, Ontario/Ascension of Our Lord), Cal U collected 18 assists on 27 field-goals.

Agee scored a game-high 25 points for the Golden Knights in the loss, while freshman forward Stephen Battle finished with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Cal U returns to PSAC West action on Wednesday, Jan. 26, when it travels to face Slippery Rock at 8 p.m. Last year, the Vulcans swept the series against The Rock after Slippery Rock won both meetings during the 2008-09 season. Live stats of the game will be available by clicking here.
