CALIFORNIA (June 14) – After three years serving as the assistant coach with the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer program,
Emedin Sabic will now work in the same role with the Cal U men's soccer program beginning in the 2010 campaign. A search to fill Sabic's position with the women's team is currently underway.
"The past three years have been incredible. I have learned so much from Coach Al Alvine and I'm looking to build on that," said Sabic. "I'm thankful for this opportunity and I'm looking forward to this new challenge in my career and to work with Coach Dennis Laskey."
Sabic helped lead the Vulcans to unprecedented success over the last two seasons, as the program won a combined 31 games after managing only four victories in 2007. Last year, Cal U won its first-ever Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West title and appeared in its first PSAC and NCAA Tournament. On the national stage, the Vulcans advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals after allowing only one goal in their first three games.
Originally from Bosnia, Sabic is no stranger to men's soccer in the PSAC after playing four years for head men's soccer coach
Dennis Laskey from 2003-06. As a player, he registered 11 goals and 11 assists in 82 career games with 55 starts. Sabic also was a member of teams that appeared in three-straight PSAC Championships, including 2004 when Cal U made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
“Emedin has matured into a professional coach, it's not always easy for people to make the transition from player to coach,” said Laskey. “He is well on his way to having a great career in coaching.”
Sabic moved to the United State in 1999 and graduated from Cathedral Prep in Erie, Pa. While with the Ramblers, he was a three-time, first-team all-metro selection and helped lead Prep to the state championship in 2001.
A 2007 (bachelor's) and 2008 (master's) graduate from Cal U, he currently holds a “C” license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and resides in nearby Dunlevy, Pa.
