Cal U falls back to tie for 12th place

DANIELS, W.Va. (May 4) – Senior Bryan Bustamante (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) carded a two-over 74 (36-38) on Tuesday, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team fell into a tie for the 12th place at the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional Championship with a two-round score of 57-over 633 (312-321).

The Vulcans finished yesterday's round in eighth place before dropping into a tie with Millersville for 12th place at 57-over 633. Host Concord stretched its lead to eight strokes after shooting an 18-over 594 (290-304) through the first two rounds, while IUP is only eight strokes back at 26-over 602 (294-308) behind the play of individual leader Gavin Smith (three-under 141; 68-73).

Bustamante made the turn with an even-par 36 following birdies on the par-four 10th and par-five 18th after having two bogeys on the front nine. He later added a birdie on the par-five 2nd with three bogeys on the back nine. Through the first two rounds of the tournament, he is tied with teammate James Currie (Worcester, England/Malvern) at 35th overall with a 13-over 157 (83-74).

Currie (44-39) struggled through the first nine holes, shooting an eight-over 44 following four bogeys and two double bogeys. He then shot two pars and collected a birdie on the par-five 2nd before finishing the back nine at three-over 39.

Sophomore Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) is one stroke behind teammates Bustamante and Currie at 14-over 158 (76-82). In the second round, he carded a 10-over 72 (42-40) and collected three birdies, but finished with two double bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-four 9th.

Sophomore Austin Stoddard (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) and freshman Justin Newbauer (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) are also separated by only one stroke through two rounds. Stoddard finished with an 11-over 83 (43-40) on Tuesday and managed three birdies on his final six holes. He currently is tied for 73rd overall in a 108-golfer field with a 19-over 163 (80-83). Newbauer carded a 10-over 82 for the second-straight round to enter tomorrow's final round at 20-over 164 (82-82). He totaled an eight-over 44 on the front before shooting a two-over 38 on the back nine.
