Men's Golf in eighth place after first round

DANIELS, W.Va. (May 3) – Behind a two-over 74 (39-35) by freshman James Currie (Worcester, England/Malvern), the Vulcans finished the first round of the NCAA Super Regional Championships on Monday in eighth place with a 23-over 311 at the par-72 Glade Spring Resort.

In the 20-team event, the California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team is only six strokes back of moving into the top five in the team standings. Through the first round, Concord is in first place with an impressive team score of two-over 290, while IUP is close behind at six-over 294. American International (Mass.) posted a seven-over 295 and holds a four-stroke lead over fourth-place St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.), who carded an 11-over 299. The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a team from the Super Regional will advance to the NCAA National Championships.

Currie finished the first round tied for 10th overall in a field of 108 golfers with a two-over 74. He shot a three-over 39 on the front nine and was at five-over before collecting three birdies and a par on the final four holes. Currie, who finished a season-best third overall in a tournament early last month, led the Vulcans on Monday with four birdies and shot par on eight holes.

Sophomore Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) shot an even-par 36 on the front nine before finishing the first round at four-over 76 (36-40) and tied for 23rd overall. Classmate Austin Stoddard (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) rebounded from a triple-bogey on the par-four 10th by carding a two-over on the final eight holes. He tees off in tomorrow's second round at 1 p.m. with an eight-over 80 (39-41).

Freshman Justin Newbauer (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) carded a seven-over 43 on the front nine after double-bogeying three-straight holes before finishing the round with a nine-over 81 (43-38). Senior Bryan Bustamante (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) shot an 11-over 83 (41-43) on Monday after paring four of the last six holes.

The Vulcans continue play at the NCAA event in Daniels, W.Va., tomorrow, Tuesday, May 4, with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m.
