VERONA, Pa. (April 8) – Freshmen
James Currie (Worcester, England/Malvern) and
Chad Dechowitz (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) each shot a five-over 75 on Thursday to lead the California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team to a third-place team finish at the annual Carnegie Mellon Invitational, which was played at Longue Vue Club.
Currie and Dechowitz finished in a five-way tie for third at the five-team invitational, which featured 30 golfers. Playing in his first action since October, Dechowitz collected a pair of birdies en route to shooting 37 on the front nine before finishing with a 38 on the back nine. Currie also finished with a 37-38 after shooting par on 11 of 18 holes.
Fellow freshman
Justin Newbauer (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) carded an 11-over 81 (39-42) to finish 17th overall for his fourth top-20 finish of the season. Newcomer
Evan Matoske (Jensen Beach, Fla./Heritage Academy/Jensen Beach) was one stroke back of Newbauer and rounded out the Cal U scorers with a 12-over 82 (43-39).
Junior
Eric Smith (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) competed as an individual and shot a 19-over 89 (43-36).
The host Tartans won the tournament title with 26-over 306 after having the top two players on the leaderboard. Saint Vincent finished close behind with a 29-over 309 and the Vulcans were only seven strokes back, finishing with a 33-over 313. Carnegie Mellon senior Christopher Lee claimed medalist honors by one stroke over teammate Michael Cheng with a two-over 72 (38-34).
The Vulcans, who are ranked fourth in the NCAA Atlantic Region, return to action next week when they compete at the IUP-Cecil Spadafora Invitational on April 12-13 at the Indiana Country Club.
