CALIFORNIA (April 2) – Competing at the new tennis complex at Roadman Park for the first time, the No. 8 Vulcans cruised to a 9-0 win against Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
The California University of Pennsylvania tennis team extended its win streak to five matches, as it improves to 16-5 overall and 2-0 in league action this season. Meanwhile, Shippensburg falls to 2-9 this year.
The Vulcans breezed through doubles play, winning all three matches by 8-0 counts. At the first position, freshman
Jutta Bornefeld (Varel, Germany/Lother-Meyer Gymnasium) and junior
Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) posted an 8-0 victory over Kristen Herman and Jess Lodek. The 17th-ranked doubles team of junior
Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) and sophomore
Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) defeated Monica Beradi and Hannah Lolly at the second slot. Freshman
Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) and sophomore
Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Gumnasia Number 60) earned an 8-0 win over Cassie Sidone.
In singles play, Cal U continued its dominance by winning five of the six matches by 6-0, 6-0 counts. Bornefeld defeated Lodek at first singles, while 50th-ranked Stanila posted a win at the third position over Beradi.
Kowalski collected a victory over Herman at the fourth slot and Pondicas dealt a defeat to Sidone in fifth singles. Sophomore
Axelle Fernandez (Toulouse, France/Institut Familial) also registered a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lisa Snader at the sixth position. Zherdeva rounded out the shutout for the Vulcans with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Lolly at second singles.
Cal U returns to the court on Wednesday, April 7, when it travels to face Mercyhurst in Erie, Pa.
