TIFFIN, Ohio (April 19) – The Vulcans closed out their regular season by finishing ninth overall with a 64-over 640 (318-322) at the Tu Kyle Ryman Memorial, which was hosted by Tiffin (Ohio) at the par-72, 6,685-yard Mohawk Golf and Country Club.
The California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team finished ahead of Lake Erie (Ohio) and Urbana (Ohio) in the team standings at the 11-team events. The host Dragons claimed the tournament title by five strokes after shooting the lowest team score in each round, posting a combined score of 20-over 596 (298-298). Wayne State (Mich.) finished in second place at 25-over 601 (301-300), while Saginaw Valley (Mich.) placed third after carding a two-round total of 37-over 613 (310-303).
Sophomore
Austin Stoddard (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) and freshman
Justin Newbauer (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) led the Vulcans with a 16-over 160 to finish in an eight-way tie for 41st overall in a field of 76 golfers. Both Stoddard and Newbauer shot a seven-over 79 in the first round before finishing with a nine-over 81 on Monday.
Sophomore
Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) was two strokes back at 18-over 162 (81-81), while senior
Bryan Bustamante (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) shaved seven strokes off his first-round score to finish with a 21-over 165 (86-79). Freshman
Chad Dechowitz (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) also competed at Tiffin, finishing with a 22-over 166 (79-87).
Wayne State's Aaron Peterson won the individual title by one stroke after shooting an even-par 144 (73-71).
The Vulcans, who was fourth in the latest Atlantic Regional rankings (April 16), now will wait to see if they are selected to compete at the NCAA Super Regionals from May 3-5 . The NCAA selection show will be webcast at 3 p.m. on NCAA.com on Friday, April 23.
