Vulcans finish sixth at IUP Invitational

INDIANA, Pa. (April 13) – Behind top-25 finishes by sophomore Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and senior Bryan Bustamante (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem), the Vulcans finished in sixth place on Tuesday at the two-day, 17-team IUP Cecil Spadafora Invitational.

The California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team shot a 32-over 600 (301-299) to finish sixth in the team standings, but were only four strokes back of tying for third place. The host Crimson Hawks captured the invitational title with a two-under 566 (287-279) after featuring four of the 10 players on the leaderboard. Concord finished second with a 12-over 580 (284-296), while Millersville (28-over 597; 298-298) edged Adelphi (N.Y.) by one stroke for third place.

Babashanian finished with a two-round total of six-over 148 (73-75) to tie for 21st overall in a field of 88 golfers. He has posted the highest team finish in the last two invitationals in which he has competed and tied his season-best round with a 73 on Monday. Bustamante shaved five strokes off his first-round score to finish only one stroke back at seven-over 149 (77-72) and tied for 23rd overall.

Junior Eric Smith (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) carded a score of 10-over 152 (77-75) to finish third on the team and tied for 34th at the event, while freshman James Currie (Worcester, England/Malvern) posted an 11-over 153 (74-79) to tie for 37th overall.

Newcomer Evan Matoske (Jensen Beach, Fla./Heritage Academy/Jensen Beach) also competed for the Vulcans, finishing tied for 52nd at 15-over 157 (80-77).

IUP senior Gavin Smith claimed medalist honors by one stroke while playing on his home course after shooting a four-under 138 (71-67).

The event featured seven Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schools with Cal U finishing fourth among league members.

The Vulcans return to action with the first of back-to-back tournaments, beginning Friday, April 16, at the Findlay Invitational. The two-day event will be played at the Red Hawk Run Golf Course in Findlay, Ohio.
