No. 13 Vulcans edge No. 10 Rollins, 5-4

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 4) – The No. 13 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team opened its Spring Break play in impressive fashion on Thursday afternoon, posting a 5-4 victory at No. 10 Rollins after losing to The Tar last season.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 7-2 this season with their only two losses coming against NCAA Division I programs. Meanwhile, The Tar has now lost three of their last four matches to fall to 5-3 this year. Rollins was one of only two NCAA Division II programs to defeat Cal U last season.

Cal U posted a pair of wins in doubles play to take a 2-1 lead on Thursday. Junior transfer Julia Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa./Laurel Springs/Miami (Fla.)) and sophomore Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) teamed up at first doubles to post an 8-5 win over Rollins' Margaret Junker and Kayli Ragsdale, the ninth-ranked doubles team in the South Region. Freshmen Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Jutta Bornefeld (Varel, Germany) added an 8-5 victory over the duo of Holly Fleming and Stefania Tkach.

In her first match with the Vulcans, Cohen registered an impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory over 21st-ranked Roshni Luthra at first singles. Sophomore Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) improved to 4-1 at third singles this season following a 6-3, 6-3 win against Tkach. Bornefeld also railed to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Rollins' Lisa Loft at fifth singles.

The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Friday, March 6, when they travel to Melbourne, Fla., to face No. 22 Florida Tech at 2 p.m.
