No. 13 Tennis edges No. 3 Embry-Riddle, 5-4

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 10) – The No. 13 Vulcans rallied to win four matches in singles play, including a game-clinching win by freshman Jutta Bornefeld (Varel, Germany), to claim a 5-4 victory at Embry-Riddle (Fla.) on Wednesday evening.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 10-3 overall this year with five wins in six matches during Spring Break play. Meanwhile, Embry-Riddle, a NAIA program, falls to 8-5 this year after winning its conference tournament last season.

In doubles play, Bornefeld and sophomore Mariana Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Martha Falcao) posted an 8-2 victory at third doubles over Caroline Nilsson and Landyn Scudder. At the first position, freshman Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa) and sophomore Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) suffered an 8-4 loss to 11th-ranked Yi Ching Chen and Natasa Zorrcic, while Julija Stojkovska and Josefine Strom dealt sophomores Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) and Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) a 9-7 defeat at second doubles.

The match at first singles featured a pair of nationally-ranked players with 14th-ranked Zorrcic dealing 36th-ranked sophomore Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) a 6-0, 6-1 defeat. Pondicas posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory at fourth singles over Stojkovska and 29th-ranked Stanila claimed a 6-0, 6-1 straight-set win against Strom. Junior Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) earned her third-straight victory after defeating Abraul by a 6-4, 6-2 count at the sixth position.

Bornefeld provided the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-4 win for Cal U at third singles, where she dealt Embry-Riddles' Stojkovska a defeat at fourth singles. Since joining the program for the spring season, Bornefeld leads the team with 10 wins in singles play while playing at four different positions.

The Vulcans conclude their spring break trip tomorrow, Thursday, March, 11, when they face No. 9 West Florida in Winter Park, Fla. Previously, Cal U and West Florida met in the 2007 (Quarterfinals) and 2008 (Round of 16) NCAA Tournaments.
