Vulcans fall at George Washington, 4-3

WOODBRIDGE, Va. (Feb. 20) – After the losing the doubles point on Saturday night, the No. 13 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team dropped a 4-3 match to Division I George Washington at the Montclair Country Club.

The loss marks the first of the season for the Vulcans, who fall to 6-1 this year. Meanwhile, the Colonials move to 4-2 this season.

Cal U was down 1-0 after being swept in doubles play for the first time this season. At third singles, sophomore Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) improved to 18-1 all-time in dual matches after posting a 7-6, 6-3 victory over junior Dorota Lysienia.

Freshman Jutta Bornefeld (Varel, Germany) tallied a 6-4, 6-2 win against GW's Jennifer Hirsh at the fourth position, while classmate Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa) dealt sophomore Zoe Krohn a 6-0, 6-2 defeat at fifth singles. Since joining the program in the spring, Bornefeld and Pondicas have posted a combined 7-0 record in singles play.

The Vulcans return to the courts on Sunday, Feb. 28, when they travel to face No. 21 Ohio State in Columbus at 6 p.m.
