Men's Basketball wins at Lock Haven, 83-73

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Feb. 13) – Junior guard Joe Berenato (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) scored a career-high 22 points on Saturday afternoon to help the Vulcans extend their win streak to four games by posting an 83-73 victory over Lock Haven at Thomas Fieldhouse in PSAC West play.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team moves to 16-9 overall and 5-6 in league action. After six-straight losses in divisional play, the Vulcans are now fifth in the league standings and only 1.0-game back of making the PSAC Tournament with four games left in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles fall to 6-14 overall and 3-6 in divisional play.

In only his second start of the season, Berenato finished 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor and four-of-six from the free-throw line. He also added three rebounds and two assists on Saturday.

Sophomore guard Travon Vann (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) set a career high in points for a second-straight game, scoring 19 points and adding a team-high eight rebounds and four assists. In the last four games, the 6-4 guard is averaging 13.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 57.6 percent (19-of-33) from the floor.

Forwards Rashawd Hatten (Clairton, Pa./Clairton) and Kelsey Williams (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Hatten collected six rebounds and two blocks, while Williams posted five rebounds, two blocks and four steals against Lock Haven.

Trailing 31-30 with 6:49 left in the first half, the Vulcans scored 13 unanswered points to claim a 43-31 lead with 1:39 remaining before the break. The Bald Eagles snapped the 6:15 scoreless streak with a three-pointer in the final minute of the half to enter halftime down 43-34.

In the opening minute-plus after the break, Cal U scored six-straight points to stretch its lead to 15 points before Lock Haven made it a single-digit game at 49-40. The Vulcans rallied to increase their led to as many as 17 points, 67-50, with 6:21 left in the game. However, the Bald Eagles made it a 72-64 contest before Cal U hit back-to-back shots and made five free-throws to seal the win down the stretch.

After shooting over 61 percent in the first half, Cal U finished the game by making 57.9 percent (33-of-57) from the floor – its second-best performance of the season. The Vulcans also shot 50.0 percent (three-of-six) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Lock Haven shot at a 45.5 clip (25-of-55) from the field and 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from three-point territory.

Redshirt sophomore guard Andres Carpio scored a team-high 17 points in 25 minutes off the bench for Lock Haven. Classmate Eric Brennan finished 16 points, while junior Sharif Bolton added 12 points in the loss.

The Vulcans out-rebounded the Bald Eagles by a 33-28 margin and dominated from in close by scoring 48 points in the paint. Cal U also tied its season low with just eight turnovers and scored 25 points off 13 turnovers by Lock Haven.

Cal U returns to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 17, when it hosts rival No. 11 IUP for an 8 p.m. tip-off at Hamer Hall. Earlier this year, the Crimson Hawks tallied a 71-59 victory over the Vulcans.
