CALIFORNIA (Nov. 6) – Senior
Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) posted a team-high 15 digs in her final regular season contest, as the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team closed out the 2010 regular season with a victory over Mercyhurst, 3-1 (26-24, 17-25, 25-17, 25-18) at Hamer Hall.
The victory propels the Vulcans to 21-11 overall and 15-4 within the PSAC, as Cal U now turns their attention to post-season play. Meanwhile, the Lakers end their season with a 16-16 record, and an 8-12 mark in the PSAC.
The Vulcans jumped out to an early lead in the first set, but after a late push by Mercyhurst, narrowly closed it out 26-24. Mercyhurst seemed to take over the contest by winning the second set and opened up the third with a 13-9 advantage. But following a Cal U timeout, the Vulcans took control by taking 16 of the next 20 points to win the third set. Cal U carried the momentum into the fourth, and secured the victory.
Sophomore
Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) led the offensive attack for Cal U with nine kills, while sophomore
Meghan Franz (Cranberry, Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and freshman
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind. / Westfield) each added eight apiece. Delaney finished the match with a .533 hitting percentage.
Junior
Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) registered a team-high 28 assists for the Vulcans, with freshman
Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) adding 11.
Cal U begins post-season action on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at Edinboro in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament.
