Volleyball falls in regional title match

EDINBORO, Pa. (Nov. 21) – Despite leading late in the first set and rallying late in the third set, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss (23-25, 18-25, 24-26) to Clarion in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship on Sunday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse.

With the loss, the Vulcans finish the year with a 23-13 overall record. Cal U has now posted seven-consecutive 20-win seasons with five-straight appearances in the Atlantic Regional Championship (3-2). Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles improve to 32-4 this season and will face Dowling (N.Y.) in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Dec. 2.

Following the match on Sunday, sophomores Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) were each selected to the all-tournament team. In nine sets this weekend, Franz finished second on the team with 27 kills (3.00 per set) while hitting at a .333 clip and registered seven blocks (0.78 per set). Fromknecht added 22 kills (2.44 per set) and led the team with 11 blocks (1.22 per set) over the three post-season matches.

Sophomore Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) led the team with eight kills on Sunday, while the trio of Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle), Franz and Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) each added five kills. Eshleman also posted 17 assists and two service aces against the Fighting Scots, while Franz tallied a pair of blocks to finish the year with a team-high 136 blocks.

Junior Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) collected a team-high 11 digs and also tallied three aces to finish the season only four behind the school record. Senior Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) added eight digs to finish her career ranked fourth in school history with 1,429 digs.
