SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Oct. 9) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team extended its win streak to seven matches over the weekend by claiming wins over West Chester, Cheyney and Kutztown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.
With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 14-7 overall this season with a 10-1 mark in league action. Entering the final month of the regular season, Cal U is currently tied with Edinboro and Clarion for first place in the PSAC West standings.
Cal U opened the weekend with a 3-0 sweep (25-5, 25-20, 25-23) of West Chester on Friday afternoon. Junior
Katya Kopanarova (Sofia, Bulgaria/81 Victor Hugo) posted a team-high 13 kills, while sophomores
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and
Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) each tallied seven kills. Franz also finished with four blocks (two solo). Senior
Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) collected a team-high 15 digs and freshman
Megan Casey (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) added eight digs. Against the Golden Rams, junior
Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) finished with 32 assists.
Later on Friday, the Vulcans earned another 3-0 victory (25-7, 25-7, 25-10) against Cheyney. Sophomore
Niki Keno (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville) and freshman
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) each registered seven kills. As a team, Cal U collected an incredible 30 service aces, including a team-high eight by freshman
Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove), which is the most by a Vulcan since 2007. Freund also tallied a season-high 26 aces against the Wolves. Sophomore
Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove) finished with seven aces, while senior
Arica Smith (Mansfield, Pa./Mansfield) and junior
Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) each had six aces.
On Saturday, Cal U won the first two sets before having to battle back for a 3-2 win (25-11, 25-15, 23-25, 17-25, 15-9) against Kutztown. Franz led the offensive attack, finishing with 15 kills and four blocks, while Fromknecht and Harris added 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Paronish led four players in double-digit digs with 17, followed by McMullen with 15 and Casey with 13. Eshleman directed the offense with 48 assists and added seven kills, five digs and two blocks in the victory.
The Vulcans return to non-conference play on Tuesday, Oct. 12, when they travel to face Shephered in Shepherdstown, W.Va., at 7 p.m.
