ERIE, Pa. (Oct. 29) – Freshman outside hitter
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) recorded the game-winning kill in the fifth set at the Hammermill Center on Friday night, as the Vulcans earned a 3-2 victory (15-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-15, 17-15) against Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 19-10 overall with a 14-3 mark in league play. The Vulcans, who clinched a berth in the upcoming PSAC Tournament, also solidified a top three seed in the PSAC West with the victory on Friday. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights drop to 17-8 overall and 10-6 in divisional action this season.
Sophomore middle hitter
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) collected a team-high 12 kills while hitting at a .435 clip, while classmate
Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) added 10 kills. Junior
Katya Kopanarova (Sofia, Bulgaria/81 Victor Hugo) and sophomore
Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) each tallied nine kills against the Golden Knights. Fromknecht tied her career high with 29 assists and registered her third double-double of the season after finishing with 13 digs. Freshman
Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) also helped guide the offense with 21 assists on Friday night.
Defensively, freshman
Megan Casey (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) paced the Vulcans with a 15 digs, while junior
Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) and Fromknecht each collected 13 digs. Franz, sophomore
Niki Keno (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville) and Wilson all recorded four blocks (all assisted) and Fromknecht finished with four service aces.
Cal U concludes the regular season next week when it hosts three matches at Hamer Hall, beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 3, against Ashland (Ohio) at 7 p.m.
