Volleyball rally falls short versus Clarion

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 23) – After dropping the first two sets, the Vulcans won the next two sets to force a decisive fifth set before falling to Clarion, 3-2 (26-28, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 12-15), in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at Hamer Hall on Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Vulcans to 17-10 overall in 2010 and 12-3 in conference play, while the divisional-leading Golden Eagles improve to 21-3 overall and 13-1 in the league.

Sophomore Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) was one of four Vulcans that tallied double-digit kills offensively, as she posted a season- and career-best 20 kills. Junior Katya Kopanarova (Sofia, Bulgaria/81 Victor Hugo) added 13 kills while hitting at a team-high .357 percent. Sophomores Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) each collected 10 kills.

Two players posted double-digits in digs for Cal U with senior libero Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) leading the way with 22 and junior Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) contributing 15.

Fromknecht posted a team-high 29 assists to go along with her 10 kills, while freshman Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) added 18 assists and junior Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) tallied 10 assists.

The Vulcans will be on the road for the next two matches with the first coming on Tuesday, Oct. 26, when they travel to Indiana, Pa for a PSAC West match-up with the Crimson Hawks.
