CALIFORNIA (Oct. 18) – Sophomore
Nemanja Visekruna (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Thomas More) converted both his penalty kicks as the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over No. 23 Charleston (W.Va.) on Monday afternoon at Roadman Park.
With the interregional win, the Vulcans improve to 9-4-2 overall and the Golden Eagles drop to 9-3-1. The game has large playoff implications for both teams as each looks to improve their résumés leading up to the post-season.
Nationally-ranked Charleston got on the board first at the 49:21-mark after Visekruna was assessed a yellow card, setting up the first of three penalty kicks on the day. Sophomore Rob Vincent was able to find the back of the net behind Cal U senior goalkeeper
Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park). A little over seven minutes later, Visekruna was called upon to take a penalty kick for the Vulcans following a yellow card by the Golden Eagles' Justin Emerson and beat sophomore goalkeeper Sean Teeper. Visekruna's second penalty kick occurred at the 72:12-mark and he beat Teeper for a second time to put the Vulcans ahead for good, 2-1.
For the game, Charleston held an 11-8 advantage on shots with the Vulcans maintaining a slim 4-3 edge on corner kicks. Yobbi made two saves en route to recording his 36th career victory.
Cal U wraps up the season with three games on the road, beginning Sunday, Oct. 24 when it travels to Takoma Park, Md. to take on Washington Adventist for a 1 p.m. contest. The game was originially scheduled for Sept. 30, but was postponed due to extreme weather.
