CALIFORNIA (Jan. 5) – Behind a successful fall post-season, California University of Pennsylvania ranks fourth in the final set of fall standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, announced the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) recently. The Director's Cup annually honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program in both men's and women's sports.
The Vulcans jumped from 18th to fourth in the final set of fall standings with a total of 229 points. Cal U finished third in team standings of the football championships and fifth in both women's soccer and volleyball.
Cal U is one of three programs from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) to rank in the top 20 nationally in the fall standings, as Shippensburg ranks ninth with 204 points and Edinboro is 16th with 157 points.
Last year, the Vulcans finished ninth in the country with 583.25 points and were the only team from the 16-member league to rank in the top 20.
Grand Valley State (Mich.), who has won the Director's Cup six-straight years, remains atop the standings after the fall with 380 points. Minnesota Duluth is second with 239 points and Carson Newman (Tenn.) is third with 231 points, while Cal U and West Texas A&M (216) round out the top five.
