CALIFORNIA (Jan. 3) – The Vulcans forced 28 turnovers and allowed only 13 second-half points en route to posting a 59-40 victory against Millersville in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play at Hamer Hall on Sunday.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 9-3 this season with a perfect 5-0 record at home. Meanwhile, Millersville dropped its fifth-straight game to fall to 5-6 this year.
The trio of junior forward
Andrew Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Cheltenham), sophomore guard
Travon Vann (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) and sophomore forward
Kelsey Williams (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) all scored 10 points for the Vulcans. Vann also added a team-high six rebounds, four assists and three steals, while
Kelsey Williams finished with six rebounds and two steals off the bench.
The 40 points scored by the Marauders are the fewest allowed by the Vulcans since a 120-31 victory over Penn State-Greater Allegheny in the season-opener of the 2007-08 season. Cal U also forced Millersville into a season-high 28 turnovers and only a .368 field-goal percentage (14-of-38).
At halftime, the Marauders led by two points before and expanding their lead to 34-29 in the opening minutes of the second half. The Vulcans then mounted a game-changing 16-2 run over a span of 7:26 to take a 45-36 lead with 9:55 left in the game. During the rally, Millersville failed to score a field-goal (0-for-5) and committed five turnovers. The Marauders trimmed the deficit down to six points, 46-40, with 8:15 remaining before the Vulcans scored 13-straight points to close the game, capped with a dunk by
Kelsey Williams.
In the win, Cal U shot season-lows from both the field (39.7 percent; 23-of-58) and the free-throw line (47.8 percent; 11-of-23). However, Millersville managed to shoot 36.8 percent (14-of-38) from the floor after making only 22.2 percent (4-of-18) in the second half. The Marauders also struggled from the charity stripe, making only 7-of-17 attempts (41.2 percent).
Sophomore guard Mike Seibert scored a team-high 14 points (all in the first half) off the bench in the losing effort. Redshirt freshman guard Guye Weber finished with nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds for the Marauders.
The Vulcans held a slim 39-37 advantage on the glass behind 17 offensive rebounds. Cal U, who finished with 28 bench points, scored 42 points in the paint and 29 points off turnovers.
Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 6, when it travels to face Glenville State at 5 p.m. Earlier this year, the Vulcans registered an 80-54 victory over the Pioneers at Hamer Hall.
