CALIFORNIA (Jan. 2) – Behind 30 combined points from juniors
Andrew Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Cheltenham) and
Travis Williams (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God Christian Academy), the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball snapped its two-game losing streak with a 63-51 upset win over No. 25 West Chester on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play at Hamer Hall.
The Vulcans improve to 8-3 overall this year, while the Golden Rams drop to 9-1. West Chester entered the game as one of four undefeated teams in the PSAC.
Travis Williams scored a team-high 16 points on four-of-six attempts from the field with two three-pointers and 6-of-10 from the free-throw line. Young added 14 points on six-of-nine shooting and a team-high eight rebounds (three offensive).
Sophomore guard
Travon Vann (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) posted 10 points, five rebounds and a game-high five assists, while sophomore forward
Kelsey Williams (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) finished with seven points and six rebounds off the bench.
The Vulcans led by as many as 12 points in the early portion of the second half before the Golden Rams worked the deficit down to three points, 43-40, with 7:50 remaining. Cal U then scored eight-straight points, capped with a Young lay-up, to take a 51-40 advantage in the final five minutes of the game. Nationally-ranked West Chester again chipped away at the lead and trailed only 55-50 with 2:50 remaining before Young drilled a jumper and the Vulcans made six-consecutive free-throws to seal the win and take a 63-50 lead.
After shooting over 57 percent in the second half, the Vulcans finished the game making 48.8 percent (21-of-43) of their shots from the field and 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from long range. Cal U entered the game as the top free-throw shooting team in the league, but shot only 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the charity stripe. Defensively, the Vulcans forced the Golden Rams into their worst shooting performance of the season finishing with a .281 field-goal percentage (16-of-57).
Junior guard Kehinde Roberts scored a team-high 18 points for West Chester, while senior forward Ralph Hegamin was held to only 11 points after entering the game ranked fourth in the PSAC with 20.4 points per game. Hegamin grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds (three offensive).
Cal U out-rebounded West Chester by a 42-32 margin, but the Golden Rams scored 14 second-chance points on 13 offensive rebounds. The Vulcans collected 13 assists on 21 field-goals and also registered 10 steals after forcing 16 turnovers.
The Vulcans conclude their weekend homestand tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 3, when they host Millersville at 3 p.m. In last year's meeting, the Marauders claimed a 71-65 victory at Pucillo Gymnasium.
