Vulcans sweep Wheeling Jesuit, 3-0

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 22) – In a rematch of last year's NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship, the Vulcans extended their win streak to six matches with a 3-0 victory (26-24, 25-17, 26-24) over Wheeling Jesuit on Tuesday night at Hamer Hall.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 13-4 overall this year. Meanwhile, Wheeling Jesuit drops to 10-5 overall.

Senior outside hitter Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood), who was selected the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Week earlier in the day, collected a team-high 14 kills with 11 digs. Classmate Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) and sophomore Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) each added 11 kills. Amaral added five blocks (three solo) and seven digs.

Defensively, junior libero Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) led a quartet of Vulcans in double-digit digs with 14. Seniors Nist, Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and Renata da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) all finished with 11 digs. da Silva directed the offense with 46 assists in her first extended action since late Agust.

Cal U returns to PSAC play on Frdiay, Sept. 25, when it hosts Gannon for a 7 p.m. match at Hamer Hall.
