Vulcans post win over Ashland, 7-2

MONROEVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 22) – The California University of Pennsylvania tennis team swept doubles play and collected four wins in singles play to earn a 7-2 win over Ashland on Thursday at the indoor Club 4 Life.

The Vulcans, who finished last year ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings, improve to 3-0 this fall season. Meanwhile, the Eagles drop to 1-2 this year.

Sophomores Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) and Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) posted an 8-2 win over Victoria Goudy and Paige Cooper at first doubles. At the second spot, junior Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) and sophomore Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) dealt Corinne Pasley and Alexandra Ware an 8-5 defeat. Sophomore Mariana Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Martha Falcao) and junior Laurie Navarro (Eysus, France/Jules Supervielle) completed the doubles sweep for the Vulcans with an 8-6 victory over Erika Sullivan and Christa Halicki.

Zherdeva claimed a 6-2, 5-7 (10-2) victory at fourth singles over Pasley, while Stanila earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Victoria Goudy at the first position. Vishnikina collected a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Katherine Goudy at the fifth slot, while Oliveira added a 6-3, 6-0 win at sixth singles.
