MEADVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 21) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team posted a 26-over 602 (295-307) to win the 17-team Guy W. Kuhn Invitational title on Monday. The two-day event was hosted by Allegheny at the par-72, 6,628-yard Meadville Country Club.
The Vulcans held a three-stroke lead after the first round on Sunday before expanding their lead to six strokes in the final round. The win marked the first for Cal U under third-year head coach
Peter Coughlin. Clarion edged Daemen (N.Y.) , a NAIA program, by one stroke to finish second in the team standings at 33-over (298-311).
Freshmen
Justin Newbauer and
James Currie anchored the Cal U performance, as both finished in the top 10 among the 96-golfer field. Newbauer carded a five-over 149 (70-79) to finish in a three-way tie for sixth overall, while Currie was one stroke back at six-over 150 (75-75) to finish in a tie for ninth place.
Junior
Eric Smith (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) posted a two-round score of eight-over 152 (73-79) and finished tied for 17th overall, while senior
Bryan Bustamante (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) shot a nine-over 153 (78-75). Sophomore
Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) carded an 11-over 155 (77-78) to finish in a tie for 28th overall.
Sophomore
Austin Stoddard (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) competed as an individual and finished in a three-way for second place with a three-over 147 (75-72).
Clarion's Jared Schmader claimed medalist honors by three strokes with an even-par 144 (71-73).
Cal U returns to action on Monday, Sept. 28, when it competes at the Flagler Invitational at the Palencia Club in St. Augustine, Fla.
