CALIFORNIA (Sept. 16) – Behind the game-tying and game-winning goals by freshman midfielder
Chris Moehler (Centreville, Va./Paul VI Catholic), the Vulcans snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 overtime victory over Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at Roadman Park on Wednesday evening.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team improves to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in divisional action. Meanwhile, Lock Haven drops to 2-3-1 overall with a 1-3 mark in league play. The win also snapped the Vulcans' six-game losing streak to the Bald Eagles that dated back to October 2005.
Trailing 2-1 for more than half of the second period, the Vulcans evened the score at 2-2 when Moehler tallied his second goal of the season at the 71:40-mark off an assist by sophomore
Steve Nese (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills). With the score tied, neither team was able to win the contest in the final 18-plus minutes of regulation.
In the overtime period, Moehler scored his first career game-winning goal in the 96th minute off an assist from junior
Felipe Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Coleaio Objetivo). The goal came on a rebound from a free kick by Souza and after the Bald Eagles were whistled for offsides and a foul.
Junior goalkeeper
Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) collected two saves in 90 minutes to earn the win. In comparison, Bald Eagles' goalkeeper Chris Custer finished with four saves after facing 15 shots.
Lock Haven took the first lead of the game in the 16th minute before Nese tied the game at 1-1 with his first goal as Vulcan off a corner kick by Souza. The Bald Eagles reclaimed the lead in the final minutes before the end of the first period when junior Zach Miller scored off a feed from sophomore Greg Shertzer, 2-1.
In addition to holding a 15-5 advantage in shots, the Vulcans also posted a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. The highly physical game ended with the two teams combining for 39 fouls and three yellow cards.
Cal U is idle this weekend before hosting Columbia Union (Md.) in a non-conference game on Thursday, Sept. 24, at Roadman Park. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
