Vulcans finish fourth at Clarion Invitational

CLARION, Pa. (Sept. 14) – The Vulcans registered with a two-round total of 16-over 592 (297-295) to finish fourth overall in the team standings at the 13-team Hal Hansen Invitational, hosted by Clarion University at the par-72, 7,056-yard Clarion Oaks Golf Club.

IUP earned the invitational title by 13 strokes with an eight-under 568 (284-284) behind three top-10 finishers. Ohio Valley finished in second place with a five-over 581 (291-290), followed by the host Golden Eagles at 10-over 586 (293-293) and the Vulcans. The California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team finished third among seven Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schools at the event.

In his first career action, freshman James Currie (England) led Cal U with an even-par 144 (75-69) to finish in a five-way tie for seventh place. Currie carded a four-under 69 in the final round of the event, which tied for the second-best round by any of the 80 golfers at the two-day invitational.

Senior Bryan Bustamante (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) finished 21st overall and second on the Vulcans with a four-over 148 (73-75). Sophomore Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) was among five golfers tied at 28th overall with a six-over 150 (73-77), while teammate Justin Newbauer was one stroke back at seven-over 151 (76-65).

Junior Eric Smith (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) carded a two-round total of 11-over 155 (79-76).

Senior Cory Dillinger of Davis & Elkins earned medalist honors via playoff against fellow senior J.R. Jones of Ohio Valley. Both Dillinger and Jones finished the 36 holes tied at three-under 141.

The Vulcans return to action on Sunday, Sept. 20, when they begin play at the Kuhn Invitational. The two-day event is hosted by Allegheny College (Pa.) in Meadville, Pa.
