MARIETTA, Ohio (Sept. 1) – California University of Pennsylvania junior
Eric Smith (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) recorded a seventh-place finish at the Burger King Ohio Valley (W.Va.) Invitational to lead the Vulcans to a fifth-place effort at their first event of the 2009-10 season.
Smith finished the 36-hold event with a 10-over 150 (76-74) and finished in a four-way tie for seventh place. Freshman
Justin Newbauer carded a 13-over 153 (78-75) to finish tied for 14th place in his first collegiate event.
Sophomore
Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) posted a 17-over 157 (77-80), while classmate
Austin Stoddard (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) and senior
Bryan Bustamante (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) finished tied at 18-over 158.
Indiana (Pa.) claimed the invitational title over host Ohio Valley by tiebreaker - score of the fifth player on both teams - after the two teams finished at 37-over 597. Clarion finished third at 42-over 602, while Fairmont State (50-over 610) and Cal U (51-over 611) rounded out the top five in the team standings.
Clarion's Jared Schmader claimed medalist honors by two strokes with a two-round score of one-over 141 (70-71).
The Vulcans return to action in nearly two weeks at the Hal Hansen Invitational, hosted by Clarion on Sept. 13-14.
